4. APPETITE FOR SEX

God created sex to feel good. And because He did,He also had to give many commandments and instructions regarding it. God knew how easily this appetite could become distorted and destructive. Over and over in Scripture, God describes what should and should not be involved in the healthy fulfilling of our sexual appetite. But because of our sinful nature, many people are drawn into sins of sexual immorality. The world’s view that “if it feels good, do it,” and “free love” have brought a whole series of sexually related consequences upon our world, such as the increasing rates of STDs, AIDS, teen pregnancies, abortions, unwed mothers, and broken marriages. Sexual addictions, lust, pornography, homosexuality, and prostitution are all related to our feeble attempts to make ourselves happy by perverting the blessing of sex that God provided us with. Ecclesiastes teaches that sexual gratification can become a snare with chains worse even than death (7:25–26).

People often resort to using sex as a means of controlling the emotional pain and fear of aloneness. At first this may seem to work. As I explained in my book Addicted to Love, “The mood change brought on by orgasm kills the pain and provides a momentary sense of being ‘normal’ again, of being ‘in control.’ But as the addictive cycle continues there comes a time when after the relief, the pain returns worse than before, triggering a need for more relief, causing more pain, and so on, until sex controls the individual, not the other way around.”3
